'A thin strip of land between islands, connective tissue between organs, Isthmus explores every meaning of the word. Mellor notices these tiny links with a microscopic focus on time and memory. This negative space is seen in stark minimalism, without names, most imagery boiled down to natural forms but, as the narrator says, “Deep clouds of silt brood/ beneath the surface, begging to be disturbed." It takes a truly gentle soul to express moments as delicate as these, but the beauty of the collection comes from the thumbprints left behind in trying to hold onto them.'
